Gold Diary

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 16 October 2026

Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how the Gold Diary mobile application (“the App”, formerly GoldCal) handles your information. The developer of the App does not operate any servers and does not collect, receive, or store your calculations, photos, or history. The App does use a small number of third-party services, described below, to show live gold rates and to sync your data through your own iCloud account if you turn iCloud on. The App shows no advertising, does not track you, and contains no advertising or analytics code.

Information Processed by the App

The App may process the following information on your device:

  • Jewelry details you enter (e.g., weight, rate, making charge, tax, jeweler name, item type, gold quality)
  • Your calculation history
  • Your My Gold register, if you use it (see My Gold below)
  • A history of what you did in My Gold (for example, a piece added, changed, sold or handed over), which contains no amounts
  • Settings and preferences (e.g., theme, country, currency, units, favorite currencies)
  • Optional photos of jewelry items, if you choose to take or attach them

None of this information is sent to the developer or to anyone else.

How the App Uses Your Information

The App uses the information only to:

  • Perform calculations
  • Save and display your history
  • Sync your calculations, My Gold and settings between your devices through iCloud, if you turn iCloud on
  • Show gold rates and daily rate notifications for your chosen country and currency

No data is sent to the developer.

Data Storage and Security

  • Your calculations, My Gold data and settings are stored on your device, in the App's private storage.
  • One iCloud switch covers the whole App (Settings › Data & iCloud). While it is on and you are signed in to iCloud, your calculations (with their photos), your My Gold data, the history of what you did in My Gold, and the settings that describe your region (country, currency, number style, units, rate unit and appearance) are stored in the private CloudKit database of your own Apple Account, in a container used only by the App, so they can sync between your devices signed in to that account. Details are stored in CloudKit's encrypted fields; photos and papers are stored as CloudKit assets, which Apple also encrypts. This data is managed by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy, counts toward your iCloud storage, and is not accessible to the developer.
  • When you first open the App and are signed in to iCloud, the App checks your iCloud for the App's data and offers to restore it. Otherwise it asks whether to turn iCloud on; the choice starts on when you are signed in. If iCloud sync was on for your calculations or for My Gold in an earlier version of the App, it stays on after the update.
  • Earlier versions of the App kept calculations in a separate iCloud container. The App reads those calculations to bring them into your history and never changes or deletes them there. You can delete them in the Settings app under iCloud storage.
  • You can turn iCloud off at any time in the App's Settings (Data & iCloud). Your data then stays on your iPhone, and you can also choose to remove the iCloud copy.
  • The lock, Hide amounts, Hide locations, notification choices and your other display choices, the sample pieces, downloaded rates and daily backup files stay on each device and are never synced.
  • New photos, in calculations and in My Gold, are resized and their location and camera data are removed before they are saved.
  • Deleted calculations and pieces are kept for 30 days in Recently deleted (Settings › Data & iCloud) so you can restore them.
  • The developer has no ability to access or view your iCloud or device data.

My Gold

My Gold is an optional jewelry register inside the App. It keeps the details you enter about your pieces (such as names, weights, purity, owners and givers, where a piece is kept, bills, gold loans, photos and papers) in the App's private storage on your iPhone. Nothing in My Gold is sent to the developer. My Gold is free for up to 5 pieces; Pro, a one-time in-app purchase, adds more (see Purchases below). Anyone can look through the sample collection.

  • While the App's iCloud switch is on, your My Gold data (pieces, people, photos, papers, exchanges, wishes and handovers, your own rates, bill notes, and the settings that describe your register, such as the country it is valued in, its currency and units, and zakat settings) is stored in your private iCloud with the rest of your data, as described above.
  • Photos you take in My Gold are not saved to your photo library.
  • Your iPhone's own backups (iCloud Backup or a computer backup) include My Gold data if you have them turned on.
  • The App keeps up to 7 daily backup files on your iPhone.
  • Spreadsheet exports and backup files are created only when you choose to make them, and are saved where you choose. These files are not encrypted, so keep them safe; by default exports leave out where pieces are kept.
  • Wishes (who a piece is meant for), handovers (a piece passing to someone in your family) and zakat settings are part of your My Gold data: they stay on your iPhone and, if iCloud sync is on, in your private iCloud like the rest. Zakat, which is off unless you turn it on, is worked out on your iPhone. A zakat reminder is a local notification that contains no amounts.
  • PDF reports, and a piece shared as photos or as a PDF, are made on your iPhone only when you choose to make them, and are saved or shared where you choose. Nothing is uploaded to the developer. Like exports, they are not encrypted.
  • Gold loan reminders are local notifications that contain no amounts or lender names.
  • You can delete all of the App's data (calculations, My Gold, photos and the history) at any time in the App's Settings (Data & iCloud).

Third-Party Services

The App interacts with the following third parties. Like any internet request, each request reveals your device's IP address and basic technical information (such as the device type and operating system) to the service that receives it. Each service's own privacy policy applies.

Apple Services

  • iCloud (CloudKit): while iCloud is on, stores and syncs your calculations, My Gold data and region settings in your private iCloud account; it also reads the calculations an earlier version of the App saved in iCloud, without changing them.
  • App Store (StoreKit): processes the in-app purchase Pro and restores earlier purchases (see Purchases below). Payments are handled by Apple; the developer never receives your payment details or your Apple Account information.
  • Background App Refresh: if enabled in iOS, the App may refresh gold rates in the background so daily notifications stay current.
  • Apple system services, such as crash reports and analytics, if you opt in via iOS.

Live Gold Rates and Exchange Rates

To show current gold rates, the App downloads publicly available rate data directly from these sources. The requests contain no information about your calculations, history, or photos:

  • Joyalukkas (joyalukkas.com): gold rates for India, the Gulf countries, Malaysia and Singapore
  • Gulf News (gulfnews.com): gold rates for India and the Gulf countries
  • FENEGOSIDA (fenegosida.org): gold rates for Nepal
  • PNJ (pnj.com.vn): gold rates for Vietnam
  • Gold Traders Association (goldtraders.or.th): gold rates for Thailand
  • Truncgil (truncgil.com) and Altınkaynak (altinkaynak.com): gold rates for Turkey
  • IBJA (ibjarates.com): benchmark gold rates for India
  • Dubai City of Gold (dubaicityofgold.com): gold jewellery rates for the UAE
  • UOB (uobgroup.com): gold bar prices for Singapore
  • iSagha (isagha.com) and eDahab (edahabapp.com): gold rates for Egypt
  • gold-api.com and Swissquote (swissquote.com): the international gold price, with Yahoo Finance (finance.yahoo.com) as a backup
  • ExchangeRate-API (exchangerate-api.com): currency exchange rates

Apart from Joyalukkas, Gulf News, the international gold price and exchange rates, a source is contacted only for the countries you use in the App: your currency, the country My Gold values in, and the countries of your pieces.

Gold Price History

To show the gold price over time on the Home screen, and value over time and gains in My Gold, the App downloads daily and monthly gold prices from Yahoo Finance (finance.yahoo.com) and daily and monthly exchange rates from Frankfurter (frankfurter.dev). These requests contain only a currency and a date range, never details of your calculations or pieces. Historical gold prices from the World Bank (licensed under CC BY 4.0) are included in the App.

Jeweler Directory

The App downloads a public list of jewelers from a file hosted on GitHub Pages (mirshakalif.github.io), at most about once a day, to suggest popular jewelers in your country. The request contains no personal information.

No Advertising or Tracking

The App shows no ads. It contains no advertising or analytics code, does not use the advertising identifier (IDFA), does not ask for permission to track you, and does not track you across other companies' apps and websites. No data is collected by the developer.

Purchases

Calculating is free, and so is My Gold for up to 5 pieces, with everything on each piece and iCloud sync. Pro, a one-time in-app purchase (no subscription), adds as many pieces as you like, PDF reports, zakat, spreadsheet import and exchanges, the App lock and sharing a calculation as a PDF (free on a device where the App was used before version 3.0; the App notes this on the device and in your iCloud). Family Sharing can share it with your family. Anyone who bought Remove Ads in GoldCal 2 has Pro. Purchases are made and paid through your Apple Account and handled entirely by Apple; the App only asks the App Store, on your device, whether Pro is owned. If a purchase is refunded or no longer shared, nothing is deleted: with up to 5 pieces My Gold works as the free version; with more, your My Gold data stays on your device and in your iCloud, and can still be seen, exported, backed up and deleted, but not changed until Pro is bought or restored, or until no more than 5 pieces are left. An App lock that is on keeps working until you turn it off.

Permissions

  • Camera and Photos: the App asks for access only when you choose to take, attach, or save a photo of a jewelry item. Photos are used only as item photos in your history.
  • Notifications: if you turn on daily gold rate notifications, the App schedules local notifications on your device. Their content is created on your iPhone from the rates the App has downloaded; no developer server is involved. If you turn on a gold loan or zakat reminder in My Gold, the App schedules a local reminder on your device.
  • Face ID: if you choose to lock the App (Settings › Privacy, with Pro), iOS checks your Face ID or passcode on your device when the App opens and when you return to it after a minute away. The App never receives your face data.

Your Rights

You have full control of your data at all times:

  • Delete calculations and pieces within the App, with or without Pro: you can always delete your own data. They stay in Recently deleted for 30 days, then are removed, also from your iCloud account when iCloud is on (or the next time it is turned on).
  • Turn iCloud off, or remove the iCloud copy, in the App's Settings (Data & iCloud).
  • Delete all of the App's data in the App's Settings (Data & iCloud). Calculations that an earlier version of the App saved in iCloud are not changed by the App; you can delete them in the Settings app under iCloud storage.
  • Turn notifications off in the App's Settings (Notifications), with the bell on the Gold Rates screen, or in iOS Settings, and revoke camera or photo access in iOS Settings.
  • Remove the App to delete all data from your device. Data stored in iCloud can be deleted from your device's iCloud storage settings.
